Original designs by Jim Gilbert, adapted for cross stitch by Sheron Ruffell. This book contains the three full-size colour cross-stitch patterns from the West, Mid, and North Coast shown on the front cover. Patterns are full size and are approximately 37 cm x 27 cm (14in. x 11in.) with each based on accurate, tradional designs. Also included is a First Nations area map, Aboriginal art within a cultural context, Aboriginal designs used in cross stitch explanation, illustrated cross stitch instructions. Soft cover, 8 1/2in. x 11in., 36 pages.

An excellent venue for a new way of appreciating First Nations art. Some years back, I attempted to cross stitch a whale from illustrations in your book, Learning by Doing Northwest Coast Native Indian Art. I had to re-draw the illustration onto a weave fabric and then by trial and error completed the task. I should have waited for this... It would have been so much easier. As an avid needlepoint enthusiast, I have been searching high and low for patterns of Pacific NW coast Native Indian art my search has ended! The cross stitch graphics in this book can easily be converted to needlepoint canvas. I can t wait to start the first of many projects. About the Author

My two older brothers and I we born in Port Alberni BC where my parents had settled when they immigrated from the Shetland Islands. We were raised in the lower mainland where I graduated from high schools with majors in art and commerce. I have always had an interest in any type of arts and crafts being taught and encouraged by my mother at an early age, especially my love for knitting and embroidery. I have spent my life living in smaller mining communities and raising my three children, along with working full time. I moved to Tumble Ridge in 1992 to be with and marry my wonderful husband Doug, and this is where I discovered my love for cross stitching and the new experience of another way of painting with thread. From the moment I first started cross stitching, I wanted to design my own pattern, especially ones of Native art as these patterns seemed to be non-existent and wanted to share my love and respect for it with others. Then a chance meeting with Karin Clark gave me the opportunity to fulfill my dreams. It has been quite a rewarding experience converting these beautiful works of Jim Gilbert into cross stitch and I hope others will enjoy them as much as I do.
