Alfred, Wayne - Kwamxalagalis
'Na̱mg̱is artist Kwamxalagalis (Wayne Alfred) was born in ʼYa̱lis (Alert Bay), British Columbia in 1958. He began to involve himself in sketching and painting Kwakwa̱ka̱’wakw designs in 1971. By 1975 Wayne began to carve in wood and was selling his work to local residents and tourists alike. Wayne still produces pieces for sale to the public as well as ceremonial objects, which have been used in potlatches celebrating the traditional rights and privileges of the Kwakwa̱ka̱’wakw. Wayne is a member of the Hamat̕sa dance society and has begun to teach his singing, dancing and carving skills to the younger generation.
